Abdominal Fat Linked to Lower Brain Volume in Midlife

Ugh, losing weight and keeping it off is really hard. For those of us who wonder if all this pressure to avoid obesity is a societal vanity project, fueled by the pharmaceutical industry, here's a new study that shows the link between excess fat and brain atrophy. In the past, we've used body mass index (BMI) for these kinds of studies, which has drawbacks. In this new study of 10,000 people, they did an MRI to measure internal abdominal (visceral) and whole body fat. They found that higher amounts of both types of fat predicted lower brain volumes (brain atrophy). Women with high amounts of visceral fat had even more brain atrophy than men.
