Research continues to demonstrate the connection between physical activity, nutrition, and healthy aging, and new evidence shows that combining exercise with antioxidants — such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene (found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin) and polyphenols (found in berries, green tea, and dark chocolate) — can enhance muscle strength and physical function in older adults.
This October 2025 article by Wang, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed 39 randomized trials and found that antioxidants alone can boost strength, exercise alone improves walking distance, and the combination of both delivers the greatest gains in muscle strength and mobility for older adults.
