Go Nuts, Even with Diverticulosis—Science Backs It Up

The conventional wisdom has been that people who eat nuts and seeds can cause or worsen diverticulosis because little, hard bits of food get caught in a small outpouching of the GI tract (known as a diverticulum). Turns out, that myth’s ready for retirement.


The May 2025 article by Barlowe, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, followed nearly 30,000 women for over a decade. And guess what? There's no link between eating peanuts, nuts, seeds—or even corn—and developing diverticulosis. In fact, corn reduced risk. Better yet, women with the healthiest diets (think DASH, Healthy Eating Index, and AHEI) were significantly less likely to develop the condition at all.
