One of the harder parts of obesity treatment is not losing the weight—it’s keeping it off. I’m encouraged by the growing evidence that patients may be able to switch from an injectable GLP-1 to a daily pill while still maintaining much of the weight they’ve lost.

This May 2026 study by Aronne, published in Nature Medicine, evaluated adults who had previously lost weight with injectable tirzepatide or semaglutide and then switched to the oral GLP-1 medication orforglipron or to a placebo. After one year, participants taking orforglipron maintained substantially more of their previous weight loss—about 75% after tirzepatide and 79% after semaglutide—than those switched to placebo. The findings support oral GLP-1 therapy as a potential option for maintaining weight reduction after injectable treatment.
