People love to assume that “plant-based” always means healthy. But there’s a big difference between vegetables, beans, and whole grains versus refined carbs and processed snacks that just happen to come from plants.
This April 2026 study by Park, published in Neurology, examined plant-based dietary patterns and dementia risk in more than 92,000 adults. Researchers found that participants with healthier plant-based eating patterns had a lower risk of Alzheimer disease and related dementias, while diets higher in less healthy plant-based foods were associated with a higher dementia risk. Notably, participants whose diets shifted toward lower-quality plant-based foods over time had up to a 25% increased risk of dementia, whereas improving diet quality was associated with reduced risk.
Because “plant-based” can still mean glorified junk food in a leaf costume.
