Food additives are designed to make products look better and last longer. Whether they are helping us live longer is a different question.
This May 2026 series of studies by Touvier, published in Diabetes Care, the European Journal of Epidemiology, and the European Heart Journal, found that higher consumption of certain food colorings was associated with increased risks of type 2 diabetes and cancer, while higher consumption of preservatives was associated with increased risks of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Although these studies show associations rather than causation, the findings add to growing evidence that limiting ultra-processed foods and unnecessary additives is a reasonable strategy for long-term health.
