Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression Report 2024: 'We Have Much Work to Do'

None of us want a doctor who is disengaged, exhausted, or emotionally numb. A new study by Medscape of nearly 10,000 respondents, out this week had some good news. The percentage of physicians experiencing burnout has dropped from 53% in 2023 to 49% in 2024.

Which specialties are most burned out? Emergency Medicine tops the list at 63%, followed by OB/Gyn, Oncology, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine. Female physicians are more burned out than male physicians (56% compared to 44%) You might not have been surprised that female physicians are more burned out.
