Diet Drinks May Harm Liver Health More Than Sugary Ones

Emerging research challenges the idea that “diet” always means “better.” Findings presented by Lihe Liu at the United European Gastroenterology Week 2025 in Berlin reveal that adults who consumed one or more diet drinks per day faced a 60% higher risk of developing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), compared with a 50% increase among those drinking regular sugary beverages.
