Fewer Hospitalizations Than With Sitagliptin (Januvia) in People With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Medications we prescribe for blood sugar control may also influence how often patients with chronic kidney disease end up needing emergency or hospital care.

This September 2025 study by Yau, published in Diabetes Care, examined whether certain diabetes medications affect the risk of emergency room visits or hospitalizations in people with chronic kidney disease. Studying over 48,000 patients, researchers found that those taking GLP-1 medications had fewer emergency visits and hospital stays than those taking DPP-4 inhibitors.

These medications may bring more to the table than just lowering blood sugar. This study suggests they may also be associated with fewer emergency visits and hospitalizations in people with chronic kidney disease.
