Neuropathic Pain May Have a New Contender

Anyone who experiences neuropathic pain knows that finding a medication that works well and is well tolerated can feel like a recurring experiment. New options tend to get attention for a reason.

This April 2026 phase 3 clinical trial, presented at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting, evaluated crisugabalin, a novel medication for central neuropathic pain. More than 400 patients with pain following spinal cord injury or stroke experienced significantly greater pain reduction compared with placebo, with benefits appearing as early as the first week of treatment. Participants also reported improvements in sleep, mood, and quality of life, while most side effects were mild to moderate.

The results are encouraging, although it is worth remembering that conference presentations are an important first step—not the final word.
