Medicare Advantage Looks Different When You Need It

Medicare Advantage plans can look very appealing when you enroll. The experience can be quite different when you actually need rehabilitation after a serious illness or injury.

This June 2026 investigation by Ross and Herman, published in STAT News, found that some Medicare Advantage plans may look appealing at enrollment, but create serious barriers when patients actually need rehabilitation after a hospitalization. The report found that large insurers denied requests for rehab and skilled nursing care at higher rates than industry peers. When patients appealed their blocked care, the insurers overturned the company’s denials of nursing home rehabilitation care more than 90 percent of the time.
