I get why people choose diet drinks and sugar-free foods—I’ve done it too. But if those “healthier swaps” may affect brain aging, that matters.
This September 2025 study by Gonçalves, published in Neurology, followed 12,772 adults for 8 years and found that higher intake of low- and no-calorie sweeteners was linked to faster decline. A limit of this study is that it is observational and used self reported information.
