Coffee's Brain-Boosting Effect Goes Beyond Caffeine

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

No wonder I like to drink coffee, even if it's decaffeinated coffee. It turns out that there is more than caffeine in coffee that our brains like. In this study published in the June 28 in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, Maria Picó-Pérez, Ph.D. compared the brains of people drinking water with caffeine to people drinking coffee using a functional MRI. Drinking a cup of coffee (but not water with caffeine) boosted connectivity in the areas of the brain that are linked to working memory, cognitive control, and goal-directed behavior.
