A little good news for once: U.S. life expectancy is moving in the right direction. Following the COVID-related decline, fewer deaths from unintentional injuries, heart disease, cancer, and homicide have helped push U.S. life expectancy higher.

An August 2026 report by Arias, published in the National Vital Statistics Reports, found that U.S. life expectancy at birth increased again in 2024. Female life expectancy rose to 81.4 years, while male life expectancy reached 76.4 years.

This continued improvement following the pandemic-era declines is a trend I’m certainly happy to see.
