I am excited to see that a melanoma vaccine is working its way through the approval process. This is the first Phase 3 clinical trial of its type—a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine—and the early results are very encouraging.

This August 2026 article by Chen, published in STAT, reports that Moderna and Merck’s personalized mRNA therapy, intismeran, combined with Keytruda, improved both recurrence-free survival and the time before melanoma spread to distant parts of the body compared with Keytruda alone. The Phase 3 trial included 1,137 patients and represents the first randomized Phase 3 trial designed to demonstrate the benefit of a personalized neoantigen cancer vaccine. It’s exciting to think that we may soon have a vaccine designed to help treat a type of cancer, potentially opening the door to a whole new way of fighting the disease.
