Yes it’s really being considered…. A smart toilet. I’m trying to avoid the “eww” factor when thinking about the engineering behind this possibility, yet the doctor in me is intrigued with the idea of being able to monitor hydration and more easily obtain stool samples. On the other hand, a smart toilet could be used to check for pregnancy or even specific drugs in your system.
This February 2026 article by Larkin, published in Medscape Medical News, highlights emerging smart toilet technology recently showcased at the Consumer Electronic Show capable of analyzing stool characteristics, hydration status, and urinary biomarkers using optical sensors and artificial intelligence. However, significant ethical and privacy concerns remain, particularly regarding sensitive data collection.
