This April 2026 study by Ide, published in the Journal of Dentistry, found that a simple blood sugar test done in a dental office may help identify patients with diabetes or prediabetes.

Researchers found that about 35% of patients had blood sugar levels in the prediabetes or diabetes range without knowing it. Blood sugar levels also tended to be higher in patients with more advanced gum disease, suggesting that dental visits may offer an additional opportunity to identify people at risk for diabetes.
