Grandma and other boomers are the fastest-growing cannabis-using demographic. The tricky part is that cannabis can impair both working memory in the short term and with chronic use, but newer research suggests the aging brain story may be more complicated.

This December 2025 study by Guha, published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, found that in adults ages 40 to 77, lifetime cannabis use was linked to greater brain volume in cannabinoid-rich regions and stronger performance on some cognitive tasks. While the implications remain unclear, these findings may suggest potential neuroprotective effects in older adults.
