My very first impression of Dr. Gerda Maissel while meeting her on family zoom call was "What a wonderful listener!" Her understanding and extremely compassionate personality gave our family the support and control we needed at one of the most difficult times in our lives. In a time and culture where many medical opinions, protocols and practices, as well as, personal beliefs can dictate treatment and overshadow the patient (the person), Dr. Gerda was a genuine voice of support and human emotion, allowing the family to make informed decisions based on our loved one's wishes and the wishes of the family. She empowered me (and the rest of the family) by giving me the facts and medical knowledge needed to make medical decisions on behalf of my mother. What I found to be truly wonderful and unique was the fact that Dr. Gerda never questioned, judged or tried to persuade our family's decisions. She gave nothing but total respect and support for our family's (and my mother's) beliefs, decisions and wishes. Dr. Gerda handled our family and my mother with grace, reverence and respect as we fought to save her. Although my mother is no longer with us, I know she sees how hard we fought with her, and the brilliant, loving doctor who stood by our side. I am forever grateful for the wisdom, guidance and trust Dr. Gerda gave our family.

Dr. Gerda Maissel was extremely helpful to me in coaching me on the best questions to ask, and interpreting medical information/records with my father's medical condition and subsequent hospitalization. Dr. Maissel even checked in on me on a regular basis! Having a 3rd party expert in the field has been invaluable, and I so appreciate her and this incredibly helpful service, MyMDAdvisor- thank you!

Due to Dr. Maissel’s extensive knowledge of the medical system, a system which has become overwhelmingly complex, she has been of great assistance in helping us to identify appropriate treatment and to find medical professionals who can provide the needed care. Her awareness of and connection to providers in many areas has enabled her to function as a strong advocate when necessary. Although she does not provide direct medical care, she freely shares her extensive knowledge and experience, which has been very reassuring when finding the “right way” has been difficult. As our advocate, she has been both tactful and assertive when dealing with other medical personnel on our behalf and we are very grateful.

When my dad, 94, fell and broke his ankle (which required surgery), my mom and our family faced the daunting task of navigating a disjointed and confusing medical system. We knew early on we needed help. That's when Dr. Maissel came to the rescue! She helped us understand what was happening, where to get answers (so many doctors, specialists, nurse practitioners, etc) and what the next steps would be once my dad left the hospital. When my dad was moved to a rehab facility, Dr. Maissel met with the staff, at our request, when we were overwhelmed with so many people involved in his care and so many conflicting answers to our questions. During his rehab stay, there were a couple complications which Dr. Maissel guided us through and helped us understand. She also advised us on how to prevent things from getting worse for him which we learned can often happen with extended stays in a facility. She advised us on how to best and safely get him home to prevent any further physical and mental complications. We had a plan! There were times we weren't sure we could provide adequate care at home, but Dr. Maissel was reassuring and explained in detail (and every day scenarios) how we could be successful. With Dr. Maissel's guidance we were able to move my dad home after a short stay in rehab, provide care and effectively utilize outside aides (physical & occupational therapy, CNA) There is no doubt my dad's successful recovery is because of Dr. Maissel's guidance, expertise and caring. She continued to support us throughout and, even now, several months later, we know we can go to her for straight answers.

Making medical decisions is one of the hardest tasks that I’ve ever experienced. Not being either versed or trained in medicine I’ve had to make a plan to weigh in on my wife’s recovery from a serious automobile accident. In hindsight leaving all the decisions to the doctors in the hospital would’ve had negative consequences for my wife. As my consent for procedures was required I insisted on information and explanations from the doctors. Answers tended to be expedient. When I contacted Dr. Maissel I found a knowledgeable, experienced medical professional who has the ability to explain medicine to a lay person. In addition to medical knowledge she has extensive experience with the navigating the medical system. Having the ability to receive unvarnished information and advice has helped me to make decisions which I have not regretted and my wife has benefitted from. I would definitely recommend utilizing Dr. Maissel’s knowledge and experience to your advantage.ue to Dr. Maissel’s extensive knowledge of the medical system, a system which has become overwhelmingly complex, she has been of great assistance in helping us to identify appropriate treatment and to find medical professionals who can provide the needed care.
